Coprolites and biomarkers

Dr Fiona Gill talks about molecules preserved in ancient poo and what they can tell us about extinct animals...

This 30 minute talk was given at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2012.

Fiona Gill studies coprolites (fossil poos) from ancient animals. She compares the biological molecules she finds preserved there to their modern equivalents.

Her work has led to discoveries about the behaviour of extinct species. It may also provide new insights into how our farming activities contribute to climate change.
